6.5.Battle Squid (Torpedo) Discussion

Would like to start by saying the different moorings is a very interesting evolution of the torpedo task.

The dark graphics on a white background give us concern that the torpedo task will be a repeat of 2014 RoboSub where the target board was indistinguishable from transdek walls. To eliminate the possibility of this we suggest that a colored border around the entire board be added.

Additionally in the images the squid graphic and the cut out borders are both red(ish), we suggest that the color of one or both be changed to ensure contrast between the cut out borders and the target graphics.

Squiddy McSquid

Thanks!

I'd rather not put a border around the entire board, since these may turn out to be cut outs in the shape of the squid and tentacle. I agree that the image of the squid is too close in color to the red border of the cutout. I'm open to changing the squid and tentacle to any color that would make a good contrast.

Re: Cutout Borders

I think changing the color of the borders around the cutouts on the squid board from red to black would also address this concern, while also being easier to implement. The color of the borders on the tentacle board would remain unchanged.

Border colors

I'm open to any colors for the squid and the border of the cut out.  If the cutout border is black, what color do you suggest the squid be?  Keep it reddish?

Just wondering why black is

Just wondering why black is suggested for the cut outs since we would it to identify the holes...For underwater vision, attenuated colours will appear black(especially red goes first) and it may mix up with the background as well. Not to mention the cameras seeing the floor which may turn out black. We think obvious colours like yellow is ideal. Yellow would contrast well with red. Keep it a darker red would be good to make the difference more apparent. Of course a safer contrasting colour like green or blue(so we dont pick it up) would be great too

placement of torpedo boards

Had a look at the placement of the boards and for this year seems like the same arrangement as last year. So for last year, we had issues with us picking up both boards and the vehicle getting confused with which one to select cos they were so close. Is it possible for the boards to be placed further apart for this year?

boards

...similar arrangement the past multiple years.  Last year there were two different size squares with lettering above each.  What where you issues, so I can better understand?

Isn't that part of the challenge?  Determine which cutout to go for?  This year, the two sections should be better defined, since one will have just a tentacle, and one will have most of the giant squid.

Squid / Tentacle

Here are better representations of the squid and tentacle.  The colors can be changed

Final Design

Dave,
You mentioned that you had the final design for the boards done. Can those be posted?

Can we check on the

Can we check on the dimensions of the two torpedo boards as well? i.e. length x breadth. Also how would the lid or "seaweed" be like?

FInal squid

I was working on these over the weekend (5/13), and this is what I have.  These are the full 2ft x 4ft dimensions

Squid

Tentacle

The seaweed will be a green pool noodle cut to a length and tied in place with string.  It will block the lower circle of the squid.  There will only be one piece of seaweed, so the cutouts (white parts within the black circle on both boards) on the tentacle will be open.

Seaweed

Just want to confirm that I am picturing what you mean for the seaweed.

Pool noodle is floating in front of the target moored seperately. We would need to push it and keep holding it out of the way while shooting otherwise it should return back to covering the hole? This is in contrast to previous years where you could knock off the cover and then shoot afterwards.

Is this what you were thinking of?

Pushing seaweed

Your vision is correct.  If you don't keep holding the seaweed out of the way, it will return to cover the hole.

As you say, this is in contrast to the previous year(s).  In some ways this will be harder, on some ways it should be easier.

On a side note, I updated the image of the squid a little bit and uploaded the new image.  The link above should still work.

Seaweed

Does this mean that there will still be a couple inches on either side of the pool noodle seaweed that we can shoot through (allowing us to shoot through the covered hole without uncovering it as long as we are very accurate)?

On an unrelated note, I very much agree with previous comments that a white background would cause the entire target to blend into the background very well when viewed from far away. Almost any other color would stand out more.

Squeeze through

I haven't had the chance to check the diameter of a pool noodle, but yes, there is a possibility that you could shoot around the seaweed without having to move it.  I'm fine with that solution.

Have you been to or seen underwater video of TRANSDEC?  While it does say it's a pool, the sides are covered with a carpet of "green" algae.  On a normal pool, the white border would blend in, at TRANSDEC the white could help make it stand out.

Cut Out Or Background

Has it been decided whether the squid and tentacle are going to be cut to shape or are going to be on a white background?

Background

I'm open to either.  Not cutting it to (rough) shape would be easier on me.  Some believe that the white background/border would make things harder, I think the opposite.

Background

We are fine with either way too. We do agree that the white background would be easier for both vision and for making the target

Agreed. White is great for

Agreed. White is great for the background. Transdec background is usually dark green/dark blue. We were testing on the board and realised that aiming is going to be a challenge given the borders are black and the squid is dark red. You blend this with transdec background of dark green/dark blue, this will make it challenging to aim.  Currently we can see well cos our swimming pools walls are white. Able to make at least the rings to aim around a contrasting yellow?

White background / Yellow rings

Then I'll keep the white background as-is and not cut it to rough shape.

I haven't sent the prints off to be made yet, so right now, I'm still open to changing some colors.

Yellow seems a little washed out... Other suggestions?  (Pink?)

Green rings

We agree both that white should be the background and that the yellow ring seems washed out. Maybe dark green like this? (sorry for the crap quality)

transdec is dark greenish

transdec is dark greenish blue. The colour needs to stand out and dark green will just merge with the background  .Suggestion is to make the border thicker to make it less "washed" out. To help everyone visualise, heres a screenshot of the torp task from last year: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6b5umcINZzeazRTY285Y0RSS1k

Thanks for the screen shot.

Here's the squid with a few different colors and the yellow border set to 2" (5.1cm) [original border is 1" (2.5cm)]

Any confirmation of what the final design and colour would be like? Also can we check on the distance between the tentacle and the squid? Lastly if possible can give an example of how the floating noodles would be like pictorially?

Confirmation

Sure!

These are my thoughts:

  • Yellow 2" border around the circular cutouts
  • The tentacle will be right next to the squid.  At most, 12" (30.5cm) separation between the two boards
  • I'm going to order the banners with the prints this weekend, but I can take a picture of the seaweed (floating noodle) in from of the white board this weekend.

Sub Breaching Inquiry - Seaweed Inquiry

Hello all,

According to this rule from 2016:

"During the competition, the vehicle must operate autonomously, with no control, guidance or communication from a person or any off-board computer. The vehicle and any parts connected to the vehicle must submerge and remain submerged. No item may break the surface or be attached to the vehicle and left floating while the vehicle is underway."

When the torpedo is fired, is it still considered "the vehcle and any parts connected to the vehicle" and still be affected by "must submerge and remain submerged".

Our intial design has the torpedo assembly positively bouyant and it will float to the after firing for easy recovery. Does that break the rules?

Additionally, how is the 'seaweed' being tethered to the smaller target on the squid? Will it be tethered to the bottom with 6ft of rope, or will it be mounted to the bottom of the targeting board

Vinh Nguyen,

KSU AUV

Our torpedos float too, based

Our torpedos float too, based on previous years experience it's not considered as breaching.

And yeah the seaweed release is kinda late (along with the final rules point system), we still aren't sure how this will work other than noodles. Would need the pictoral description like in the other tasks.
